How virtual boundaries and buried perimeter wire differ in setup, repairs, sky view and lawn shape, using exact listing wording. This guide uses exact Amazon listing records and captured public reviews, not hands-on mowing tests. Seller specifications illustrate the questions to ask; they do not establish measured cut quality, positioning accuracy or safety.
Two ways to draw the same line
A boundary-wire mower keeps inside a loop of low-voltage wire pegged to the ground or buried a few centimeters down. The wire carries a signal, and the mower turns when it senses the edge. A wire-free mower carries a map instead: it locates itself by RTK satellite corrections, by cameras that recognize grass, by LiDAR that measures surroundings, or by several of those together. The Navimow i105N listing describes RTK with vision enhancement and app-drawn virtual boundaries; the ECOVACS Goat O1000 LiDAR PRO listing describes dual LiDAR with no perimeter wire and no RTK antenna.
The GARDENA SILENO Flex listing presents the boundary wire as the most accurate and weather-independent way to define an area. Each statement is marketing for its own approach. What you can do is list what each approach requires from your lawn and then check those requirements against the property. The buying guide puts that measurement step before any feature comparison.

What the wire actually costs you
Installation is labor: you lay wire around the whole perimeter and around every island you want protected, peg it or bury it, and connect both ends to the charging station. The FOTEEMO 150 m boundary cable kit lists 492 feet of wire, fifty pegs, connectors and terminals, which gives a sense of the material involved for a mid-sized lawn. Longer runs need more wire, and a break anywhere in the loop stops the mower until you locate and splice it.
The wire also fixes the shape of the mowing area. Adding a flower bed or moving a play structure means moving wire. On the other hand, once installed a wire does not care about tree cover or satellite geometry. Verify the maximum wire length and the minimum distance from edges in the manual of the exact mower, because those limits are model-specific. Our accessories guide covers matching wire gauge and connectors to the mower rather than to a brand name.

What wire-free asks of the sky and the map
RTK systems need a reference antenna with an open view of the sky and a mower that can see enough satellites as it travels. Listings often describe how they cope when that fails: the Navimow record mentions vision enhancement for tree-covered lawns, and the LUBA records describe vision used under trees. Camera-only and LiDAR systems avoid the antenna but still depend on lighting, contrast between grass and non-grass and the absence of tall obstacles that confuse mapping. The eufy E15 record, for example, states explicit lawn requirements about grass height, slope and even grass species.
Mapping is a one-time task in the app, but it is a real task: you drive or walk the mower around the perimeter and every island. Zone limits, minimum path widths and maximum map areas appear in the feature bullets and should be compared with your measurements. Read the navigation guide for what each acronym describes, and treat any centimeter-level accuracy claim as the seller's figure, not a positioning test we ran.
Match the approach to the lawn shape, not the trend
An open rectangular lawn with a clear sky and no islands is undemanding for either method. A lawn split across front and back yards connected by a narrow side passage, shaded by mature trees and bordered by beds you rearrange every season, is where the differences show. Wire handles shade and season but hates redesign; wire-free handles redesign in the app but needs sky, contrast or a LiDAR-friendly environment. Write down which constraints apply to you before reading any ranking.
Our wire-free comparison only lists complete mowers whose exact listing states no perimeter wire and which carry a captured public review record. It does not compare positioning accuracy or mapping speed, because we have not measured them. The all-mower comparison mixes both approaches under the same published formula, so a boundary-wire model with a strong review record can rank alongside a wire-free one.
Questions to settle before ordering either type
For a wire mower, ask: what wire length and gauge does the manual require, how are islands wired, how is a break located, and what happens at driveways and paths. For a wire-free mower, ask: where does the antenna or reference station go, what sky view does the manual require, what is the mapping procedure, and how does the mower behave when it loses positioning. For both, ask where the charging station can sit and how the mower returns to it through your passages.
None of those answers is in a title. Each belongs to the current manual for the exact model revision, and a garage bundle or renewed listing may differ from the base product. Use the coverage planner to compare your measured area with the stated capacity, then confirm the boundary method fits the property. A navigation name and a stated capacity are entry criteria for our shortlists, not evidence that either approach will suit your yard.
